Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
