In the dying moments, sheer ecstasy erupted for Chelsea and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández bundled in a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola howling at the heavens and gifted the stand-in Chelsea manager a career-defining moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane could be billed as the Premier League's greatest managerial mismatch, making the memory of Fernández's crucial intervention one to warm the 40-year-old for years to come.

A Stark Contrast in Pedigree

On the home bench was the era's defining coach, a man with an unparalleled CV for elite clubs Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, overseeing his 1,012th match. In the visitors' dugout, stood a one-time trainer at non-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had worked in City's own academy and arrived to make his senior managerial bow after being seconded from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a host of absences, most notably Chelsea's key midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task began as a mission that seemed close-to-impossible.
